IAFI represents the community of professionals concerned with the delivery of fish, seafood and associated products that are safe, of acceptable quality, and which are produced sustainably and equitably for sale in the global marketplace.

IAFI is an international NGO, registered with the United Nationals Economic and Social Council. We exist to promote the exchange of information & ideas, to foster interaction, understanding and professional collaboration among individuals, organisations and governments, and to disseminate knowledge concerning the safety and quality of fishery products, and their sustainable and equitable production.  Whilst many organisations focus exclusively on sustainable production, IAFI recognises that only by focusing on the whole supply chain (including processing and distribution) can we ensure that consumers receive products guaranteed to have been produced safely and sustainably, and with respect to the rights of workers as all levels of productions and distribution.

We have the objective to promote a scientific and evidence-based approach to the inspection and certification of fish, seafood and associated products and production systems. Given the importance of fisheries and aquaculture to the economies of developing and transition countries, we work extensively with development agencies, including the United Nations and bilateral donors, to disseminate and promote capacity building in research and education to improve efficiency, safety and economic benefits from fisheries and aquaculture.

IAFI is an observer as the Codex Alimentarius Commission, and we regularly review and disseminate proposals for international standards to ensure that our members are kept up to date.  Every two years we run the World Seafood Congress. IAFI is a founder and co-editor with FAO and INFOFISH of the quarterly publication The Fish Inspector. We also provide financial support the professional advancement of young people engaged in aspects of the safety, quality and integrity of fisheries and aquaculture products.
